Anyone with even a passing interest in London’s cultural landscape will undoubtedly be familiar with Remi Kabaka. As someone who has been deeply entwined in the vibrant, interlinked worlds of art, music and fashion over the past few decades, Remi has, in many ways, become the beating heart of the city’s ever shifting artistic sands.
The son of the famed Nigerian percussionist of the same name, Kabaka was a multi-hyphenate before the term was even coined, shifting seamlessly from setting up the Outsiders Gallery with Steve Lazarides and working with Banksy to creating the “audiovisual club concept” Blaakspring to art directing brands, labels and artists.
It is with long-time collaborator Damon Albarn, however, that has especially fruitful and varied results. He’s travelled to the Congo with the likes of Dan the Automator and Spoek Mathambo as part of DRC Collective and participated in the gloriously sprawling Africa Express. And with Gorillaz, Kabaka went from playing percussion and giving voice to the character of Russel Hobbs to executive producing the critically lauded album “Humanz”, co producing The Now Now album and travelling the world as a core member of Gorillaz Sound System.
Kabaka previously curated the “Propa Tee” exhibition as part of the MIA’s Meltdown Festival at London’s Southbank Centre. The exhibition, which explored music, fashion and memory, was comprised entirely of T-shirts from personal collections, giving an insight into a range of musical subcultures, movements and genres from the 1970s onwards.
